"The second, which appears to be blank is, in fact, inscribed in pencil "T. Ralph, 18 Ivy Lane Canterbury" you can just discern this if you blow it up enough. George Smith is recorded at No. 2 Ivy Lane on the 1861 Census and his daughter Rosa Marie was born in Ivy Lane (probably No. 2) in October 1858, only two years after the house was built."

'A photo found recently hidden behind another in a frame for over 80 years and believed to be of John Murch, a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who arrived back in Britain, in 1916. He fought at Vimy Ridge and died in Arras in 1918. He appears to be driving three senior officers. Would love to see if part of a sequence if anyone has similar taken in Canterbury. Photo is marked only J Craik Canterbury.'

JAMES CRAIK

James Craik was born in Tonbridge, Kent, in 1853

Working as a Grocer's Porter when he was 17, living with his mother and stepfather John Rogers in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. His mother Joanna was already widowed in the early 1860's, when James was 8. There was a death of a James Craik in 1859, in Tonbridge, Kent, which might have been his father*.

*In an 1855 directory of Kent, Essex and Herts there is a listing for a J. Craik, High Street, Watford noted under Market Gardeners (possible?)

1870's Tunbridge Wells with his mother and step father

James married his wife Louisa Jane G. Mills in 1878 in Thanet, Kent.

Aug. 8, 1879 - English Mechanic and World of Science No. 750 - It is much to be regretted that no Engraving of this truly exquiste Organ Case has ever been published; a photograph, may, however, be obtained of Mr. J. Craik, St. Peter's Street, Canterbury. price 7d, post paid.

In 1881 and 1882 he's located at 51 Burgate Street and noted as Artist and Photographer. He has the help of a female assistant in his shop.

By 1889 he had moved locations and is now at 4 St. George's Gate.

In the early 1890's James is noted as Photographer, he is living at home with wife Louisa Jane and his daughter's Clara , Florence H., Maggie J., Hilda M. and his son James G. In his shop, he has the help of a young man, Charles Southee who is a Photographic retoucher from Canterbury.

I read somewhere that in 1894 James sold the shop to a Charles Nesbitt, but he kept the Herne Bay shop. Whether this is accurate or not I'm unsure, but see the photograph below.

In the early 1900's James CRAIK is still working as a Photographer. Three of his young unmarried daughter's are working for him, Clara, Florence and Maggie. He also has daughter Hilda, and son James who are not in the business yet.

*Whitstable Parish Church Magazine December 1902 issue has an advertisement for James Craik Artistic Photographer, 4 St. George's Gate, Canterbury

A book entitled "A Peep at Old Canterbury,"Illustrated with twenty photographs by J. Craik, Canterbury, Gibbs 1889, Square Quarto, 45 pages (23 thick card leaves) with 20 mounted albumen paper photographs.

1903 - James CRAIK, photographer, 4 St. George's Gate

1905 - Fisk -Moore bought the shop

In 1913 there is a James CRAIK at 9 Alexandra road, Lower Walmer in Deal (possibly him?)

In 1917 Fisk-Moore is at this address - 4 St. George's Gate

Three of his young unmarried daughter's are working for him, Clara, Florence and Maggie. He also has daughter Hilda, and son James who are not in the business yet. Whitstable Parish Church Magazine December 1902 issue has an advertisement for James Craik Artistic Photographer, 4 St. George's Gate, Canterbury A book entitled "A Peep at Old Canterbury,"Illustrated with twenty photographs by J. Craik, Canterbury, Gibbs 1889, Square Quarto, 45 pages (23 thick card leaves) with 20 mounted albumen paper photographs. 1903 - James CRAIK, photographer, 4 St. George's Gate* 1905 - Fisk -Moore bought the shop In 1913 there is a James CRAIK at 9 Alexandra road, Lower Walmer in Deal (possibly him?)
